Head of the CEGB Film & Video Unit for Training & Technical Films: The unit, based outside Birmingham, had recently been taken over by a directorate based in London. The post of head of unit was newly created as part of the management reorganisation. The remit of the job was to improve standards of production as well as to integrate the unit within the new structure. I inherited five staff and recruited a sixth, and reported to a manager in London. As a unit we invested a considerable sum in new equipment in line with a strategic plan for film and video production within the CEGB.
I would claim that I forged a very viable unit by establishing it as a respected entity within the London HQ. With this the staff grew to feel they had a place in the bigger scheme, rather than being ignored on the fringes as was their initial fear. By building on the skills already possessed by the staff it was easy to lead them into producing quality output that built profile and which was appreciated by those who commissioned material from us.
